The Stanford Historical Society (SHS) is a member-supported, volunteer organization affiliated administratively with the Stanford University Libraries.  The SHS Oral History Program (OHP) captures diverse aspects of Stanford’s transformative post-WWII history through interviews with faculty, staff,alumni, trustees, and others who have contributed to, and will continue to shape, the university’s evolution and excellence.
The SHS Oral History Program Manager is responsible for the success of the OHP.  S/he works closely with the chair of the SHS Oral History Committee, and under the formal supervision of the University Archivist.
Job Purpose:
Lead and manage the SHS Oral History Program with minimal supervision.
Core Duties:
· Manage current oral history projects, plan and execute new projects, and serve as steward for existing SHS oral history collections.
·  Develop and implement policies and best practice sto optimize Oral History Program (OHP) functions, productivity, access, and impact.
·  Recruit, supervise, and support a team of up to40 volunteers per year; select and oversee the work of contract service providers (e.g., transcribers, interviewers, editors, media consultants).
·  Develop and present oral history training programs and workshops.
·  Evaluate and ensure program quality and effectiveness;provide ongoing oversight of and feedback to volunteers and other contributors.
·  Independently complete multiple OH interviews(including research and transcript editing)
·  Plan and oversee the implementation of a variety of broad-scope, theme interview projects that document Stanford’s evolution“from good to great” and involve multiple individuals and group interviews.
·  Identify, develop, and nurture productive OHP partnerships with stakeholders such as Stanford’s academic schools/units and key university offices including the Alumni Association and Public Affairs, interacting successfully with high-level officers including academic deans.
·  Create and implement outreach strategies to expand awareness and use of the OH collection, including publicity and media products.
·  Advocate vigorously for the OHP within the university and to external constituencies.
·  Continually assess OHP operations and accomplishments and work directly with the OH Committee Chair and University Archivist to ensure program success and to resolve sensitive or complex issues;develop recommendations to the SHS Oral History Committee concerning strategic priorities and policy formulation; prepare reports of OHP accomplishments and progress toward goals.
·   Oversee all project activities including record keeping, budget, and expenditures.
·    Be alert to possible incremental funding opportunities and prepare proposals.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements:
·  Bachelor’s degree and 5 years relevant experience
·  Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects,establish priorities, solve problems, and accomplish goals through informal and formal channels
·  Demonstrated leadership skills, inspiring and motivating others to achieve shared objectives
·  Familiarity with oral history professional practices,ethics, and methodology
·  Demonstrated planning and organizational skills
·  Prior experience supervising volunteers and/o rstaff
·  Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with a variety of audiences (faculty, staff, alumni,trustees, community, other)
·  Demonstrated effectiveness working in a higher education environment similar to Stanford’s
Preferred Qualifications:
·   Advanced degree in history or other socialscience
·   Knowledge of and enthusiasm for the history of Stanford University
·   Familiarity with Stanford’s academic culture; demonstrated ability to network with Stanford faculty and staff colleagues to optimize program effectiveness
·   Management responsibility within an institutional or public oral history program
·   Experience and expertise in oral history professional practices, ethics, and methodology
·   Demonstrated success conducting interviews of faculty or other high level individuals
·   Experience teaching classes or workshops
Experience with different kinds of media, especially video; familiarity with audio and video equipment used in conducting, editing, preserving and disseminating oral history interviews
