The Associate Director of Marketing Programs is responsible for leading overall marketing initiatives, programs, and efforts for the Exploratorium. The Associate Director of Marketing Programs directs the work of the Marketing Project Manager, Digital Marketing Specialist, and Social Media Program Coordinator. This position works closely with strategic internal and external agencies to help drive awareness and generate revenue to the museum. By integrating cross-departmental teams including Social Media, Marketing, PR, Membership, Development, and Web, this position will be responsible for elevating the institution as a stronger market competitor. As an Associate Director, this position helps to mentor other members under the marketing and membership groups and frequently serves an important role on cross-departmental teams and initiatives. This position will report to the Director of Marketing, Retail, Frontline and Membership.


This Associate Director of Marketing Programs plays a key role in creating and implementing a multi-year marketing plan designed to achieve the museums goals in visitor attendance and associated revenue.



  • Work in partnership with the Director of Marketing, Retail, Membership, and Frontline to help lead a 18-month integrated marketing plan that will refine and strengthen the museum’s brand, diversify and expand audience engagement, and strengthen the marketing department infrastructure with the museum
  • Manage staff, budgets and agency contracts to optimize Exploratorium brand perception, awareness and intent to visit/support
  • Achieve targets for audience growth, reach and engagement
  • Support membership sales, margin and operating income goals
  • Direct sub-business (Global Studios, Store, Rentals, Group Sales), support including projects and level of investment
  • Manage market research and media
  • Direct ongoing online initiatives with the Web team to strengthen marketing campaigns
  • Research markets, forge partnerships and create new lines of business for Exploratorium IP
  • Create networks and alliances both within and outside the Exploratorium to advance new partnership in media, tourism, and membership
  • Develop, strategize, and manage $2M+ budget for Marketing, Social Media and Membership
  • Help write business plans, prepare and manage budgets, manage risk
  • Integrate with and leverage our creative, mission-driven, R&D organization



  • 5 years senior marketing and an MBA, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Proven track record of implementing and managing successful digital marketing programs
  • Experience synthesizing internal data and producing analytics across all platforms for executive level reporting
  • 4 years senior level management experience of staff and projects
  • Highly collaborative with superb people skills
  • Strong vision for the outcome with good attention to detail
