JUST IN: Christopher Phipps aka @lousylinguist will share a live version of his story at the event! Come hear about the book from the perspective of someone who is in it!!  🙂

On Sat, April 22 at Octopus Literary Salon in Oakland, CA, from 1-3 pm join Career Linguist and storyteller, Dr. Anna Marie Trester, as she celebrates the release of Bringing Linguistics to Work, and shares her story approach to career.

Sharing the career stories of professional linguists to answer the perennial question of “what can you do with a degree in linguistics?” and drawing on the development activities included in her book, Dr. Trester invites participants to consider how linguists can use their language backgrounds to transform experiences into adaptable portable stories or “pocket examples” that powerfully show us using our skills and training in solving the challenges and problems that speak to us.

1930443_47988515800_9090_nAs professional challenges increasingly demand creativity in problem-solving, systems-thinking, perspective-taking, listening, and cross-cultural understanding, the world of work needs linguists now more than ever! And the ability to convey the transferability of the skills cultivated by the study of linguistics becomes increasingly critical. Stories are powerful tools for doing so, but how do we identify which stories will be the most effective in job-seeking texts and interactions like resumes and informational interviews? And what is it about these stories that makes them work? As linguists, there is no reason why our stories shouldn’t be the very best ones out there!!

Although this will be of particular interest to linguists, anyone interested in learning actionable steps to bringing a storytelling approach to their professional path should plan to attend!

Not on the West Coast? Not a problem!
There will be book launches in northern Virginia on May 21, and in D.C. on May 25, hosted by Lisa Kays (who is featured in the book), and a virtual launch party hosted by Jen Polk of From PhD to Life on June 23. Stay tuned here for updates and details!
